A collection contrasting the Steam Packet’s Ben-My-Chree against the Jeanie Johnston, an Irish replica of a 19th century sailing ship, marking the last of its kind before the steam ships dominated the seas. The replica was completed in 2002, three years before these photos were completed. Luckily the docking coincided with the visit of the Jeanie Johnston, enabling a collection to contrast boats of the two eras.
The Steam Packet’s Ben-my-Chree was built by the Dutch company Van der Giessen de Noord BV, capable of carrying 500 passengers. Several previous ships owned by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company have also been called Ben-my-Chree, including a 1927 turbine steamer, and HMS Ben-my-Chree launched 1908 (sunk during its services as a seaplane carrier in 1917).
